Annie Gavin runs away from a horribly run down orphanage in southwest Kansas in the dead of winter. She has stolen property and is being hunted down to be returned. She happens upon a cowboy who is hunting and he takes her, half frozen, back to the ranch where he lives. The older couple who own the spread are wonderful and the ranch is beautiful. They ask her to stay but she is worried the authorities will find her and what about her plans for freedom and a new life on her own? Annie is faced with a tough decision whether to leave the Bartlett's and break their hearts or stay and have hers broken.
