Maine's Knox County Sheriff Vern Hadley has never had a day like this: two of his constituents killed and his deputy assassinated. So it fell to the Barters Cove Volunteer Fire Department (and sometime posse) to discover the vicious triple murder when all the boys'd really wanted to be doing was to be getting ready to attend to their lobster pots on the morning run. If that wasn't enough for Sheriff Vern and his DEA brother, Vic, two prisoners had escaped from the State Farm and were heading down Vern's St. George Peninsula. On top of all that, 'Chief' Maxwell, a retired Navy Seal who'd seen it all in Iraq and Afghanistan, was missing and could be connected to the murders. As the two brothers wrestle with the 'persons of interest', the clues, and Vic's burgeoning interest in the coroner's new and quite attractive assistant, the story unfolds. It all ends in the cold waters of Maine's Camden harbor on a bright fall night.
