Lioslaith believes her father Dagda, a Pict leader, underestimates the Viking threat and tells him so at a public gathering. However, her father's blank disregard for her unease pushes Lioslaith to rebel. She defies her father and gets full body tattoos, the ancient warrior custom of her ancestors, and drives a deep wedge into the familial quarrel. The tattoos impart a cloak of mystery that boast Lioslaith's distinctiveness but veil her extraordinary personality and ability when by happenchance she meets the son of a prominent Viking warlord. The encounter begins an eventful journey and a destiny linked to the emerging nation of Alba (i.e., Scotland). George C. Myles artfully merges fictional characters with the historic and restores the ancient legends of the Whitecleuch chain, the Wicker Man and the Treachery of Scone. Once in every long while, an author creates a main character who is unforgettable and whose bearing is remembered long after the book is closed.
