Reseña del libro "Talking With Grandpa: A Personal Biography of Ancil Foster Haines (en Inglés)"

Come back in time with me to explore the life and times of Ancil Foster Haines (1871 - 1937) - a "Pioneer Shipping Man," the "Dean of Puget Sound Shipping Men," a "Man of Wise Counsel and Sound Judgement," a man who loved his family deeply and balanced work and family life well while he was Vice President and General Manager of the American Mail Line and other shipping companies. He was my grandpa whom I never met. "Talking with Grandpa" is a fascinating journey back in time to discover how he worked his way up from a farm boy in Ohio - His Dad had died from Civil War wounds when he was young - to become one of the most valued and respected senior shipping officials on the West Coast in the 1920s and 1930s. This personal biography includes both fact and fascinating fiction of the Roaring Twenties, the Spanish Flu epidemic, WW-1, the Great Depression and many other challenges to America and his career. My "visits" with him in Seattle's Smith Tower and the things he shared with me there are so real that I wonder whether they really came from me at all. His understanding of the subtle buildup of Japan's Imperial Navy (to WW-II) which his ship's captains were reporting, America's need for a sound ,non-fiat, monetary system, along with how to be a loving, providing and protecting father to his family of ten children are described among many other quaint stories of family life, all written later by his children. Fascinating details and photographs are included of living through the Great Depression, the labor union strife on Seattle's docks, the terrible living conditions in "Hooverville," testifying before a Congressional Committee, meeting President Harding and grandpa Ancil's business meetings with Robert Dollar and other shipping figures. But lying out of sight behind all of these facts lay grandpa's solid Christian upbringing as a boy and the firm foundation it gave him for life such that R. Stanley Dollar wrote of him in his Memorium... Ancil Haines was, "One of the builders of the Pacific Northwest who gave freely and generously of his time and effort in the interests of the community... and a loyal friend whose kindliness and modesty were as unfailing as his adherence to the highest standards of honor and integrity...". Talking with Grandpa was an eye opener for me when I finally got to meet him and it may be for you as well.
