As the author emphasizes at the beginning of this work, "this is a book of the genealogies of the most prominent of the English Barons who procured the great Charter of Liberty from King John rather than an essay on the Magna Charta itself. " Though the first 40 pages outlines the history of the Magna Charta, a translated copy of the Magna Charta, and descriptions of the document and of the series of English Charters of Liberties, the remainder of the work is devoted to the Magna Charta Barons, the founders and members of the Order of Runnemede, and their pedigrees, as well as the names and biographies of the Magna Charta Sureties, and their American descendants.
